Inspired by kintsugi - the Japanese art of repairing pottery with gold lacquer - [RE]TAIL speculates on the future of circular products. It combines prospective materials such as algae, amber, and biopolymers with broken Laufen pieces to suggest a near future in which repair culture and suturing can bring about new material assemblages and retrieve alternative approaches to design. By celebrating imperfection, can repair as a form of design not only bring value and beauty to our objects but also contribute to a future that considers lifecycles, material ecologies, and reuse?

[RE]TAIL was an experiment to re-imagine the retail sphere as a site for re-manufacturing. It launched in the Laufen Space Berlin as a part of a larger curated series called “Material Matters”.
